Most people opting out of 1.5T or 2 Tick Woodcutting like to do Teak or Mahogany trees at level 50, if ever, to unlock the faster-to-99 method of Sulliusceps at 65 (while 2T Teaks are the best for experience rates).
However, most people forget that cutting Mahogany trees up to or at level 99 offers 375 to 450 Mahogany Logs per hour, for 45,000 to 48,000 xp/hr - with 300-400 Logs cut per hour cut from Level 50 up until that point (link: additional reading: OSRSWiki on logs cut pre-99). A player hoping to profit from Woodcutting can expect to earn just ~140,000-154,000k gp/hr from their money making method. This document aims to increase the player's yield of Mahogany Logs per hour, their profit from each log via additional processing of the materials, increase the effective value (to the player) of the logs in experience or GP, and increase their power within the market or related markets of the Mahogany Log. â
For About Mahogany Trees, Levels 60 - 99 Woodcutting:
My recommendation for the the best place to cut Mahoganies is the "Tai Bwo Wannai enclosure", unless you're an ironman who's used up the trading sticks gained from other ventures such as the jungle cleanup. Otherwise, the Monkey Madness quest area and the related top-tier rewards unlocked which make the method better, such as Monkey Madness II teleports closer to the trees, is another one of the best places to use. The Tai Bwo Wannai enclosure however, is close to a bank/parcel service and has a dense population of the trees which are not often contested by other players, and is therefore is the least click-intensive/most AFK "comfy" spot for the player.
â Most players are likely to lose interest in a method after learning its hourly gains are just 100k gp/hrâ especially with the newer content currently in the gameâ but I believe even the most compelling and valid arguments made by each account build or personality type of OSRS can be broken down, dismantled, and revealed to be the same reasons "for" as Mahogany Trees at their core. This means the values of "why" are so in many ways the same as the alternatives you could present against Mahogany trees, though I do not discredit the very best methods of levelling Woodcutting such as 2 Tick Teaks [PissGaming Article on this, here]. These are in an entirely different league for experience rates and should be done if you're going to try for a high amount of experience gained per hour. I'll introduce the values Mahogany trees have in this document first by covering the arguments for other methods, their reasons for being used and by what metric they help a player progress their account. Then, to summarize, I'll cover the reasons for using this method to reach 99 woodcutting and why. â Woodcutting Metrics, Pt. I: Money/Time
If the player is concerned about the amount of time they have, but 99 Woodcutting is their goal, 1.5, or 2T Teaks is the only sensible method to use. Other methods, including Sulliusceps, aren't as "click intensive" and seem less intimidating, but are slow. If you're going to try for a fast Skillcape and want decent experience rates you should do it properly. Either learn to tick manipulate and do the best you can or accept slower methods and do it with whichever trees suit your needs the best, such as how AFK they can be, what unlocks the account has, and what needs the account will need in the future.
The extra hours to reach level 99 stops being a drawback while mahogany logs are being cut & banked. If 1.5T Teaks are absolutely not an option due to ill opinions of tick manipulation, other skills (such as efficient Slayer, Smithing, or any form of buyable, Firemaking, time gated skills such as Farming, etc) can be maxed later to recover the hours lost training Woodcutting. Once the feeling of a slower method being time-wasting is overcome, the preconceived drawbacks can start to become powerful tools a player can use throughout their Oldschool Runescape adventure long after this grind is done. This will tie into the conclusion written after the arguments against Mahoganies and their related metrics of Woodcutting are tackled, as the aforementioned "tools" make use of this information, and to have the reader come to their own conclusion, fully advised. If Woodcutting is a source of earning GP, don't. There are far better money-makers in the game now, even with the Woodcutting Skillcape Perk you're not going to be making a lot of money. But it is free to train, after axes are bought, like most other gatherer skills. In normal Woodcutting, the bird nests drops are the passive money-making for the skill and they remain the primary source of income while chopping Mahogany trees, too. Mahoganies aren't cut for the GP, rather the useful material which can be used for Firemaking or construction, the amount being gathered amplified by the things done alongside the grind in slow-release form through Mahogany Tree Farming Runs and Kingdom management. For those extra hours taken via going with a slower method, more logs are gathered from the side activities as the amount of Mahogany Logs cut from Woodcutting per hour after level 90 up to 99 approaches 400-500 organically. â OSRS Woodcutting Skillcape Perk:The Woodcutting Cape Perk makes the random chance of a Bird Nest dropping ten percent higher on each log chopped when equipped. Farming runs done off-cooldown (or when you're waking up/going to sleep, and between whenever; you aren't supposed to wake up just to do time-gated activities in OSRS) for Mahogany Tree patches and, if possible, Fruit trees, will generate more of the type of logs the account is gathering from training Woodcutting. Be sure to chop down the trees yourself for these extra logs, as 50-99 Woodcutting will bank 103,465 logs [source: osrs calculators: woodcutting skill] over the course of ~200 hours. With this time to 99 guideline in mind, keep track of the farming patch timers to make use of them as much as possible. Farming Mahogany trees is different to a normal tree such as Yews, they're planted in Hardwood Tree Patches and take ~3 days, 13 hours to grow, while fruit trees take just over ~16 hours. Be sure to wear the Woodcutting Skillcape if it's already unlocked for the additional Bird Nests. Farming is recommended at this point as its major filter is time. It's a buyable skill like most others in being a skill you'd pour money into for large amounts of experience, but it's also one of the few time-gated skills in the game currently. For this I recommend doing Farming as early as possible due to the time it takes to reach 99, while generating money for an account is 0time. An issue with 0time GP is that, while it's 0time, the quantity of GP that's generated per hour is always of a finite quantity. If each skill was completed from gatherer first into the buyables, it's most definitely going to last, but for either the incorrect combination of or when switching between the two too quickly without enough time passing between buyables, the GP will run out. One of the key benefits to mention here is the extra time in doing something on the main account while GP is made on an alt, plus the materials that are gathered, stacking with more time-gated content such as Kingdom Misc. and Farming to increase the yield of the materials. This leads to an additional point, raw materials gathered being processed into one of its later forms to have a use in some way, either in experience or profit depending on whichever is preferred. I've written about this in the previous article "More use from a Rune Dragon Alt Account OSRS" and reading this will help with understanding this section. â Woodcutting Metrics, Pt II: Secondary Benefits
Reading the article on RDAs isn't needed, though. What's important is to understand the idea of processing raw materials into its later stage forms, if doing so isn't high in wasted opportunity by taking too long to do, or replacing something better.
X amount of Mahogany logs can be made into planks each day, a little at a time, in a non-intrusive way, by incorporating dailies into the way an account trains (in this case, Magic). Collecting Mahogany logs beyond the Level 99 Woodcutting grind from the Kingdom, Farming patches, and a small amount of logs - around 500-1,000 from the bank from the 99 Woodcutting gathering, to make them into planks for cheaper construction experience. By doing so, the cost of construction is lowered and this method of training Woodcutting becomes profitable over time, and at a higher rate than 100k GP/hr. Farming ties in by adding expensive logs to the pile, their cost watered down by the large quantity of free logs gathered to lower the effective price of each log within the stack. The double-dip of a double-dip-- lowering the cost of two skills while training another two, is a great example of compounding interest of items stacks held in the Runescape Bank, where materials gathered from multiple sources have different costs, one high and one free/negative, with the material going into something else which can also be assigned a cost. The logs can also be burned to train Firemaking, a less useful skill to max outside of trimming the Woodcutting Skillcape if it was the first, or increasing the amount of experience per hour at Wintertodt before trying for the pet or an amount of KC. I would recommend using the Mahogany Logs for Magic training if the account will ever touch PvM/PvE as training this skill will increase Magic defence, so my RDA has done exactly that. Now Rune Dragons hit less with their magic-based attacks because I made planks. â Conclusion: Mahogany Logs for 99 Woodcutting on OSRS
Throughout these contents of the article, reasons for doing Mahoganies through to 99 Woodcutting have been laid out as the means to serve other skills a player would have to max anyway, while with the upmost method in the OSRS G.E/markets has been utilized to craft a situation where the suboptimal (over 1.5T Teaks) becomes tolerable, satisfactory even.
I've made the method as efficient as possible, with the final step for the finished planksâ alongside the great new Skillcape the users of this method now haveâ is to either sell them on the Grand Exchange to turn their profit, or achieve 99 Construction with Mahogany Tables/Benches using Theoatrix's method. What you do next is up to you!
